Customer Choice

What Customer Choice Means to You

For many years, regulated utilities were the sole electricity suppliers in their service territories. They generated electricity and delivered it to you at rates set by regulatory commissions. Since 2000, the electricity marketplace in territories served by many mid-Atlantic utilities has changed. Many utilities no longer generate their own electric power; their customers can choose to continue purchasing electricity from their local utility or to shop among competing suppliers.

In territories served by PHI companies in the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey, both residential and commercial customers are now free to buy their electricity from the supplier of their choice. Customers may be approached by companies wishing to supply them with electricity. Additionally, a list of companies that have been approved by the relevant Public Service Commission (PSC) to supply electricity to local customers and who are actively seeking customers is available from each jurisdiction’s PSC.

Whether or not you choose another supplier, your local PHI utility continues to deliver electricity to all customers via its extensive network of electric power lines. We still maintain the power lines and respond to emergency and routine service calls.

And we continue to supply electricity under regulated rates (Standard Offer Service) to customers who do not choose an alternate supplier.
