Outage Map by Zip Code

Outages - Key Definitions

  • Hard Hat (icon) - Indicates Pepco crews are working on outage events in the vicinity. While each hat depicts only one outage-causing event, it can represent multiple crews at work to resolve the outage. Multiple hats represent more than one outage-causing event.
  • Customer - A "customer" represents one Pepco meter.
  • Transformer - Transformers are essential links in the electric system. They change-or "transform"--incoming electricity from one voltage to another. For example, electricity is transmitted long distances at high voltages, then converted to low voltages for distribution to local neighborhoods.
  • Distribution Transformer - Converts electricity from high voltage to low voltage for delivery to individual customers. Each distribution transformer serves 1-20 customers.
  • De-energized Transformer - When a transformer is damaged and out of service it cannot do its job of converting electricity from one voltage to another, and it is "de-energized." Electricity cannot pass through a de-energized transformer and customers downline are without power until it is repaired, or re-energized.
  • Routine Outage - When Pepco performs maintenance work on its electric system, it must often de-energize a line for brief periods. This is a routine outage.
